Canvas grid calculator
Set up a drawing grid for a canvas, keep the reference image proportional, and use physical cell sizes to transfer the composition with less guesswork.
Step by step
The canvas workflow turns a small reference into a repeatable row-and-column plan for your painting surface.
Select a JPEG, PNG, or WebP from your device. The image is decoded locally in your browser.
Enable real-size mode and start with the 60 × 40 cm canvas preset, or enter the dimensions of your own canvas.
Adjust rows and columns, then copy the shapes and landmarks from each reference cell to the matching canvas cell.
Where it helps
A canvas grid is most helpful when it preserves the relationship between the reference, the subject, and the final painting surface.
Portrait studies
Use a consistent grid to position eyes, nose, mouth, and the major shadow shapes before you spend time on brushwork.
Composition transfer
The same row and column landmarks make it easier to carry a landscape, still life, or figure study across different physical sizes.
Proportion control
Grid Maker fits the complete image inside the target frame and shows unused bands instead of silently stretching the reference.
Inspectable plan
With the canvas preset selected, eight columns divide the width into 7.5 cm cells and eight rows divide the height into 5 cm cells. The image remains proportional inside the target frame.

Your reference image stays in this browser. Grid Maker does not need an account or a server upload to prepare the canvas grid.
Questions, answered
Yes. The preset is a starting point. Turn on real-size mode and enter your canvas width and height in centimeters, inches, meters, or feet.
No. Grid Maker scales the full image proportionally inside the target frame. If the ratios differ, the remaining bands stay visible so you can decide how to handle them.
Use fewer, larger squares for a quick block-in and more squares for detailed placement. The cell dimensions update as you change the row and column counts.
Yes. Download the current grid as a PNG or print the project sheet after setting the physical target dimensions.
